Summer Ready Hair and Skin! (series) Plus, Cucumber Skin Refresher

Summer Ready Hair and Skin Button

Yay!  It’s that time of year again…Lots of sunshine, hiking, biking, walking, swimming, trips to the beach, picnics; all-in-all lots of time outside!!  However, along with that can come…frizzy, dry hair and blotchy, itchy skin!  Here are some simple ways to beat the heat…as far as skin and hair are concerned anyway:

~First and foremost, drink LOTS of water. Our entire body suffers without the proper amount of water. We lack energy and develop headaches.  Water hydrates, rejuvenates and energizes every part of our body.

~ Sleep!  Our bodies need time to repair and recoup.  Without proper sleep, our hair and skin become dull and lackluster.  Not to mention our ability to concentrate or focus.  Our bodies need sleep, it’s just as important as the vitamins and nutrients we feed our body!

~Speaking of feeding our bodies…we truly are what we eat.  If we eat unhealthy junk food, we will be unhealthy and feel like junk.  Take care of yourself if you want to be your best both physically and mentally!

~Exercise everyday or several times per week!  Not only is it good for our muscle tone, when we sweat we are actually ridding our bodies of toxins that we are constantly exposed to.

~Moisturize daily, especially right after you bathe.  While your skin is still slightly damp, seal in that moisture with your favorite natural moisturizer.

I try to use all-natural products as much as possible.  The chemicals that are in lotions, soaps, make-up, deodorant, hairspray and the dozens of other hygiene products we use everyday can really build up in our systems.  These chemicals can be stored in the fatty tissues of our body.  Parabens, preservatives, fragrances…our bodies cannot work fast enough to rid ourselves of all these toxins, which leads to all sorts of side-effects and even diseases.  The less we use, the better chance at health we will have.

This series will use natural products such as, essential oils and base oils; fresh fruits and vegetables as ways to cleanse, moisturize and treat our hair and skin as summer approaches!

Let’s begin this series with a refreshing way to hydrate our skin...Cucumber Skin Refresher!

Cucumber Skin Refresher

You will need:

1 Medium to large cucumber peeled and chopped

1-2 Tablespoons purified water

Half Pallet Herb Garden!

Half Pallet Herb Garden 6

I have had intentions of getting this mini-herb garden together for sometime now; finally got a chance this weekend!  I had originally planned on using an entire pallet, but as we have added storage and a grill to our limited patio space…a half pallet fit all the herbs I wanted and still had the look I was hoping for without taking up too much space.

What you need…

Half Pallet Herb Garden

Pallet, paint and brushes, hose clamps, small metal buckets, dirt and herbs

(I asked for pallets at Home Depot and Lowe’s, they gave them to me for free!)

I enlisted the help of my father-in-law to cut the pallet in half.  You might be handier with a saw than I am…

Half Pallet Herb Garden 2

Then my littlest munchkin man helped me out with the paint job…we had a wonderfully messy time. :-)

Half Pallet Herb Garden 3

I adjusted the hose clamps to fit the buckets and then drilled the holes to screw the clamps (well, my father-in-law drilled them) into the pallet.

Half Pallet Herb Garden 4

The buckets slide right in and hang very nicely.

Half Pallet Herb Garden 5

Finish off with your favorite herbs and spices…

Half Pallet Herb Garden 7

This gives such a nice POP of color to my patio, just makes me smile every time I see it!

How to Clean Grapes and What’s New!

How to Clean Grapes

You know that white powder-y film you find on grapes?  Well, I was doing some research to find out exactly what that is and my results were inconclusive.  (If you have the answer, please do share!)  The main two answers I found were: it is a fungus or it is a wax coating.  Either way, I don’t want to eat it!

So I was very pleased to find that we already had something in the house to get rid of that film.  A couple drops of Shaklee’s Basic-H in water did the trick.  Basic-H is safe enough to bathe a baby and also safe to wash fruit!

How to Clean Grapes 2

Fill a large bowl with water and add a few drops of Basic-H.  Gently wash the grapes under the sudsy water.

How to Clean Grapes 3

Rinse well and pat dry for a much tastier looking bunch of grapes!  Wouldn’t you agree? :-)

Also, wanted to share with you a few things that are coming up around here!  The first thing is…a new blog design is in progress!  Should be easier to navigate and much more organized. (YAY!)  I have some amazing leaders on my brand partner team helping me out!  They are amazing!  Also, I have been asked to be a regular contributor on Day 2 Day Joys which is a blog I have followed and loved for sometime.  Such an honor to be a part of Rachel’s Team!  My first post over there is coming up next week!  And lastly I wanted to let you know about the next series I have going on…Summer Ready Hair and Skin!  Coming Soon!

I hope you all are well and that spring has officially sprung wherever you live!  ~Kelly

Wishing Away My Days? Enjoying This Phase of Life

Wishing Away My Days? Enjoying this Phase of Life

Most of my friends with children are all out of the diaper, potty training, naptime troubles, sleepless phase.  Most of their kids are older and are much more independent.  At 2, 4 and 8, my boys need a lot of attention and help.  I sometimes find myself wishing away these crazy times when I focus on the negative.  Days when I am so tired, but there is no sleep or rest to be had.  Days when it seems impossible to be patient and calm.  Days when there is so much whining and crying that I want to just join in!  Waa-ahh!  But then… I look to my God for the right focus and He shows me the abundant joys I have right before my eyes!  So often He is the last place I look to for help, when He should always be the first!

Wishing Away my Days? Enjoying this Phase of Life 1

Those nights when I am awakened by a sleepy little munchkin for whatever reason; THOSE are precious moments I may never see again.  When I am snuggled up in my 2 year old’s bed at 2:00 a.m.trying to calm him or get him back to sleep and he rolls over and says, “Isn’t this fun, Mama?” or “Wanna snuggle, Mama?” I may not think the loss of sleep is so fun, but sweet, cuddly moments like that are slipping away even as they occur!  Oh, to take a mental picture and breathe in the loveliness of those moments!

Wishing Away My Days? Enjoying this Phase of Life 2

A couple of weeks ago as we drove down the road, my 4-year-old read a billboard sign to me!  What?  Who taught him how to read?  :-) Sure enough, we came home and pulled out some of our beginning readers and he could slowly but surely sound them out and read several sentences to me!  We had not yet begun to formally teach him reading, but okay!  I guess it was time?  :-)  To witness those moments of discovery and joy; to cuddle up on the couch and dive into stories of adventure; to watch him experience them for the first time, in wide-eyed wonder…Oh, what wonderful moments!

Wishing Away My Days? Enjoying this Phase of Life 3

I think of my 8 year old…in another eight years he will be sixteen!!  These first 8 years have flown by!  The days may often seem slow, but those years, HOW THEY FLY!  If he moved out at 18, my time with him would be almost half over now.  OH!  That thought makes my heart sink! He has so many thoughts and questions and ideas to share.  If I wish my time away now and do not listen to the cares of his heart…I will never get a second chance. I need to be here for my children today, whatever phase they are in, whatever frustration or joy I am dealing with…the time is now.   I cannot plan the future or live in the future!  God gives us each new day to enjoy…not to wish or plan away!  TODAY I can enjoy these beautiful moments.  For tomorrow has enough trouble of it’s own…

Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.  (Matthew 6:34)
