  2. I LOVE that you shared this. I have switched my family to an all organic diet, have begun making my own cleaning supplies, and JUST LAST NIGHT was wondering about sunscreen! Can’t wait to try it! I am a new follower and am hosting today at http://www.frugalfitfamily.com – I would LOVE if you would swing by and share!

  3. I’d love to make my own sunscreen….I just get so scared that I won’t do it right and I’ll burn!

  4. I love this idea! My husband has horrible excema, and shea butter might just be the trick. Plus, I’d love to try a natural sunscreen for our family. Just pinned!

  5. Can you make this without some of these ingredients, such as just using shea butter, beeswax and zinc? God bless you, sister!

    • Yes, that should work. Really you can add zinc oxide to any favorite lotion and it becomes sunscreen! Less ingredients are always better, store bought have so many ingredients and I have no idea what they are. Lots of un-needed extras!

  6. Shea butter is not a recent discovery or accomplishment. This natural product has been around for
centuries. The history of Shea butter can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times. In fact, it is believed that some of the early users of Shea butter were great women such as Cleopatra and the Queen of Sheba.

  7. Shea butter is an ivory colored natural fat extracted from seed of the Karite Nut tree, also called the Mangifolia tree, found in the semi-arid savannahs of West and Central Africa. This tree begins to bear fruit after about 15 years, and can take up to 30 years to bear a quality crop of nuts with a high content of irremovable fatty acid. It is this irremovable fatty acid that gives Shea Butter its unique healing properties and makes it far superior to cocoa butter and other vegetable butters.

    • Hi Angel~ Yes! Shea Butter by itself has a low level of sun protection. You can add zinc oxide to any of your favorite lotions to make it a sunscreen. Just keep in mind that it will probably need to be applied more often that traditional store bought sunscreen. ~Kelly
